Abstract

In order to observe and evaluate the effect of enclosure and damping in noise control methods, the measurement of the A weighted sound levels and an octave band analysis were performed at 8.5 feet from the noise source in a variety of conditions using the calibrated CEL-175 type I sound level meters and CEL-178 octave filter set.
A marked noise reduction was observed when the noise source was enclosed in a non-lined metal cabinet. However, the amount of noise reduction was not sufficient to meet the required transmission loss of this cabinet.
Several absorption and damping materials such as 1 inch thick styroform, 1.5 cm thick felt and 2 inch thick convoluted sponge were not satisfactory in reducing the noise level. But two inch thick fiber glass showed a good damping and absorption effect.
A combination of noise control methods was more effective in reducing the noise level.
